"If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants."
-Isaac Newton (1643-1727)

Preface

The purpose of these materials is to provide additional depth in a few key areas within the broad subject of management and organizational behavior. For the academic year 2009-2010, articles originating from the Harvard Business Review (HBR) are available via the CSUN Library online database (Business Source Elite, EBSCOhost). HBR has published many articles over the years that have influenced generations of management students.

Access Instructions

The reference in brackets at the end of each citation is a link to the CSUN Library online database. For CSUN Library articles, one good search strategy is to:

  1. Using your web browser, navigate to the CSUN Library web page.
  2. Select "Periodicals" in the middle of the screen.
  3. Enter the title of the periodical (e.g., "Harvard Business Review") as listed in the citation.
  4. (note: Since students want the articles in electronic form only, it is helpful to select the "Search electronic periodicals only:" checkbox.)
  5. Select "Search".
  6. For some periodicals, there is more than one variation of the periodical, so you need to select the specific variation that you need. For example (if you did not select "Search electronic periodicals only"), for "Harvard Business Review", select "Harvard Business Review [Electronic Resource]".
  7. For some periodicals, the periodical is available from more than one electronic database, so you need to select the specific electronic database that you need. For example, for "Harvard Business Review", I typically use the "Business Source Elite" electronic database, because it is more complete than the other HBR database.
  8. (note: At this point, if you--the student--are located off-campus, you will need to enter your CSUN ID and password to access the database.)
  9. Select the "Search within the publication" tab near the top-right of the screen, because you generally want finer control over your search within database (so your search doesn't return an inordinate number of results).
  10. Finding the article within the database is probably best done with an advanced search that uses a), the name of the periodical ("journal name") which is already filled in, b), a distinctive keyword from the author's name ("Author"), and c), a distinctive keyword from the article title ("Document Title"). Select "Search" when the search query form is complete.
  11. Review the results from the database search query and locate the specific article that you need.
  12. I recommend selecting the highest-quality print output that is available. Often, this means selecting the "PDF Full Text".
  13. Print the article, read the article, and bring it to class.

Note: Additional CSUN Library databases of compelling interest to business students are collected in the Information Sources: Business and Economics index.

HBR Materials

Along with the textbook, these materials should be obtained before the first week of class. These materials can be accessed online as shown above, or can be purchased as a coursepack from the CSUN Bookstore. The placement and use of each article with the course is listed in the Course Outline.
